Highlights: Your Questions Answered

How do highlights work?

Highlights are created by pre-lightening sections of your hair using foils. This allows us to lift your natural colour several levels lighter.

After rinsing, we apply a toner to perfect the shade – whether you prefer creamy blonde, cool ice, soft caramel or something warmer

Highlights lighten the hair for brightness and lift.

Lowlights
add darker tones to create depth, richness and dimension.

Many clients have a mix of both for a balanced, natural-looking blend – especially for blondes who want more texture or brunettes wanting subtle movement.

It depends on the look you want. Highlights add lighter pieces to brighten and lift, while lowlights add darker tones for depth and richness. Many clients choose a combination for a beautifully natural, multi-tonal result.

Highlights involve lightening, which results in a visible line when they grow out, but we can tailor them to your routine depending on your commitment to the upkeep. Traditional highlights may need refreshing every 6-8 weeks. For a softer, lower-maintenance look, balayage highlights or a rooted blend can last a little bit longer.

Of course. Stripy highlights have made a bit of a comeback recently, but for most people modern highlights all about fine weaves, seamless blending, and thoughtful placement. Your colourist will always avoid chunky or harsh lines.

Highlights (in foils) lift the hair lighter and create cleaner, brighter sections.

Balayage is softer and more diffused.

Balayage highlights (foilayage) combine both for the perfect blend of brightness and softness.

Almost always. The toner perfects the shade, neutralises brassiness and adds shine. It’s essential for creating the exact colour you’re imagining.
